We're specifically told that at work - if someone attacks YOU, you can defend yourself if necessary. If someone barges in just trying to grab cash, you CAN'T hit them or attempt to detain them. Security guards / bouncers etc. have special licences to be able to do so these days.

That's probably true actually. I studied law briefly at uni and they told us about a case where a burglar broke into a womans house, through the window, and landed on a knife that was on the work surface, and he actually claimed compensation from her! (bit off topic but it shows how crazy the laws can be with things like this). And yeah, I can't really say I have too much sympathy for Boots, I'm sure they'll be alright!
