It sounds like a sane man trying to plead insanity, it all sounds pre-meditated to me. I reckon he planned to kill them in advance and prepared an insanity defense to get a lesser sentence.
It reminds me of the man who shot up the cinema during The Dark Knight Rises from a few years back, during the trial he acted erratic and did strange things in an attempt to plead insanity. It sounds similar to me.
