Either he or Leia literally had to though for story mirroring which this film was really all about. Annie became Darth Vader when he "killed" Amidala, until then there was still "light in him", and in this one he was only linked to his parents so one of them had to go as that final step. And because of the running father / son theme of Star Wars, and it again being a mirror of a Luke / Vader scene (but almost light/dark reversed?), it really had to be old Solo.
Its a fair sacrifice if it helps Kylo to dry those eyes...
