I still believe it's mostly grandstanding, NK doesn't have a pot to piss in, most of the country lives in poverty.
Image is everything to someone like Kim Jong Un, if he's seen as a strong threat then he has power. His whole regime is built upon fear and it's balanced on a pinhead. Destroy his image and you destroy the power he has which is why he's so desperate to publicise these tests.
If these tests are more than just grandstanding then I predict KJU will suffer a fatal 'accident' very soon.
