We have always been a member of the EU,in fact we helped form the current EU as it is, with all we helped set up and agree to, and then the treaties both our major parties in govt have signed over the last 20+ years.
So what was there before in the very early 70s,way before even the EU was set up in its current form, is all changed.
They could I guess make it that visas are needed if we leave, or it may be as many have said that travel to and from Europe will cost more for the UK in other ways after leaving.
I guess a lot will depend on what all the other EU Nations feel and are prepared to accommodate the UK on,should the UK vote to leave.
Another uncertainty unfortunately.

EU members don't need a visa to travel to Norway or Switzerland so why would the UK be treated differently, you might need to apply to a work visa but not necessarily
