I think in the case of older people though it's a bit different. I see it in my father in law. He was always happier on his own, doing his own thing but the older he gets, he's not able to do what he used to do before to keep himself occupied and so he seems to want contact with people more now because i would imagine boredom breeds loneliness for alot of elderly people

Even people who have always enjoyed their own company get to an age where they can't do their hobbies or whatever anymore so really only have conversation with other human beings left for them to entertain themselves.
