Personally all I can say is that I don't think it makes much difference... of the religious people I know, and the non-religious, the split between good eggs and bad 'uns is pretty similar
. So I can only conclude that it's not a factor.
I do find that close-knit church groups have a tendency to start to veer towards being cliquey and judgemental, but again, that happens with the vast majority of small close-knit groups of any kind.
