you even said "hughie decided it was now his turn to have his say and his argument" and then it was when it kicked off. Hughie thrives having his say (=shout) and he doesn't know doing it calmly or even shouting from his bed without the thug-standing-in-your-face attitude.
Alex told him to shut up and tried stop him from going further to Sam because he already knows how Hughie is and that he's clearly going out of proportion and loses his temper once again. He could have rephrased it as "calm down" instead of "shut up", but Hughie would have taken it the same way.
