This was the dramatic moment when a Vauxhall Zafira burst into flames while making its way around a McDonald's drive through.
A family of five, two adults and three children, managed to escape from the car before it caught fire and set the side of the restaurant alight.
Eyewitness Katie Davies, 32, was handing out leaflets near the McDonald's restaurant when she spotted the blaze this afternoon.
Ms Davies, from Wallsend, North Tyneside, said: 'I saw smoke coming from the car next to McDonald's.
'The family said there was steam coming through the air vents at the front of the car.
'There was a burning smell and everyone got out. They just opened the doors and bailed out of the car.
'As they were doing it I saw the flames come from under the bonnet. Within a matter of seconds the fire was touching the roof of McDonald's. I heard the tyres exploding.
'They were lucky to get out. It happened so quickly. The parents must have acted fast to get out.
'There were two adults and three children. One looked above the age of ten and the others were younger. The family were shaken up.'
