I think most people have encountered some sort of homophobia in their lives and you're right that things like this are attempts for attention, but isn't that kind of the point? It's people coming together and saying to all the people that have acted homophobic to them in the past "look at us, we don't care!" If I had been one of the protesters I wouldn't be thinking about the security guard, I'd be thinking about all the people that have tried to repress me in the past and I'd feel glad that it didn't work.
I don't personally think things like this will necessarily change anything, but I still think there's merit in it... even if they are only doing it just to make themselves feel better (which I don't personally believe is the case for most protesters), I think they should be allowed that anyway considering we have a society that allows for them to be victims. It's fair.
And I don't think this particular protest was obstructive, they were even giving them cookies and water and called it a "great event". So I don't think they went to far with it.
