My guess is that he either fancies her or that perhaps she's filling a daughter figure role in his life and by nominating her, he's needing to mentally and emotionally push her away. Call him a game player or a snake, but he has a wife who I'm sure he loves very much (and to my belief, he's never had a daughter), so I doubt he'll ever talk about his real reasons for nominating her.
He nominated Aubrey not because he doesn't care for her, but possibly because he's afraid he cares too much. He doesn't want to get any closer to Aubrey and is afraid how that would look to the public eye and to his wife.

Im sorry but I think it is more likely that James cannot deal with vacuous yanks and although she thinks she is doing him a favour by talking to him, I supsect he wishes she would bugger off and leave him alone
Though I like Aubrey and the way she is prepared to say that she wants to play the game, its refreshing
