"Backfiring"... hmmmm I suspect working as intended to be honest. You're entirely right that people don't like being told what to do, and they (the producers) know this. Reverse psychology, innit. Bear is the winner they want.
I personally don't think this is a bad thing because he's the only one who has done anywhere near enough to win
