It's deflective - often done to disarm, to inhibit and to provoke even more whilst faking being in 'sub' mode.

My thoughts exactly. Last paragraph most definitely. He keeps reminding me that I'm back to work in September to see it all again on a weekly basis. But children can and are forgiven.
