Yeah, I've sometimes thought it is kind of strange the amount time the news here discusses America with rest of the world not getting the same treatment, even other English speaking nations like Australia or Canada.
But then again look how influenced our culture is generally by America: we're obsessed with it's television, films, music, sport etc. The common language and large number of news outlets in America is part of the reason we get so much American news here. It is easier to get news out of America.
American politics does have an effect, in a few areas, on the UK, mostly foreign affairs and the world economy - for instance the 2008 banking crisis started in America and spread. But a lot of the issues that people typically vote on, in US elections, don't have any effect here.
