on weds 19 of october
just along from the new block
walking straight and totally sober
was essential living giving me stock.
just by the curb
not as steep as the highgate slope
seeing something that did disturb
a brown bulging letter of hope.
the queen was starring
so i swept freddie off his feet

into my pocket
shopping still required
then at home and kettle in the socket
no time for me to be retired.
out slips the loot
already feeling richer
the council tax bill did pollute
it destroyed my lucky day picture.
i had a name and address
and plenty of pay point slips
very well off i can confess
i could tell from the bank trips.
had a quick brew
headed for the archway tower
knowing what to expect had no clue
in the letter box gave me the anonymity power.
