Default Austrian cops raid refugee centre over ‘unprecedented’ New Year’s Eve mass sex attack

AUSTRIAN cops raided a refugee centre today over the mass sex attacks against women on New Year’s Eve.

The operation came a day after police revealed an “unprecedented” 18 reports of assaults during the celebrations in Innsbruck.

Cops believe the suspects were in their late teens of either North African or Asian descent, it was reported by local newspaper Krone Zeitung.

The victims were from Austria and neighboring Italy, Germany and Switzerland, and most were aged between 19 and 25 years old. Most of the assaults were committed between 11.30pm and 1.30am, and 16 of the reported cases happened in the town's market square.

The attacks follow a spate of sexual assaults committed by asylum seekers in Austria over the past year. In August nine Iraqi refugees and asylum seekers were arrested as suspects in the rape of a 28-year-old woman during the early hours of January 1 2016.

The attacks were a haunting reminder of the New Year’s Eve attacks in Cologne last year where hundreds of women were assaulted by migrants.
More than 25,000 people had gathered in Innsbruck’s main square to see in the New Year.
