It was all a bit... aggressive from the outset and a touch unrealistic. It would have been more in character for them to try harder to convince them first...
On the other hand I don't think them taking the guns is all that problematic. It's been shown time after time that people don't need guns to deal with walkers; in fact I always find it ridiculous at this point when they waste ammo on them. Although ammo seems to be in curiously abundant supply

As for human attacks, the only group they're really at risk from is The Saviours, who they have already said they don't want to fight... ... and if they did show up and they started shooting, their village would most likely be wiped out, so it's probably a GOOD thing they don't have guns in that respect.
