How does the wife get divorced if she's unhappy?
"A Muslim woman may petition a qadi, or in non-Islamic areas an Islamic community panel, to grant her divorce if the husband refuses. The waiting period (iddah) of a woman who seeks a divorce is one menstrual cycle or one month if she is post-menopauseal, i.e. ceased menstruating."
Talaq (Muslim divorce) isn't recognised in the UK unless the divorce took place out of this country. They have to go through normal UK proceedings for a decree absolute and then if they wish, they can go to a Sharia court for a Talaq. Its the same with marriage. Many Muslims in the UK have what's called a Nikah ceremony but this isn't recognized as a marriage under British law and so if a Talaq goes ahead after a Nikah marriage, as far as English law is concerned, the couple were merely cohabiting.
