I have three cups of coffee before I head out to work in the morning. On the way to work I stop off and buy a large Americana with an extra shot and then drink another half dozen whilst at work. Once home I'll probably down two or three more coffees before going to bed. I'm probably swallowing around. 3 times the considered safe dose

I think it was more that he drank that amount in such a short space of time.
As the article suggests, him drinking that same amount more slowly could've made the difference.
