I don't think anyone said Ellie tried to punch her directly in the face, but she was being confrontational and reckless, so someone getting hit was a result of that. She was also begging for a physical confrontation by shouting "hit me", which means she wouldn't have been opposed to having an actual fight.
I think they both ended up looking bad but Ellie definitely did make contact with a face which people are denying.
