There was an incident on our local news about a year ago involving a pensioner getting burgled. Basically his house was broken into, he went downstairs to see what was going on (his wife was upstairs) and the guy held a knife to him saying he would kill him & his wife etc if they didn't do what the bloke said, anyway the old guy was panicking like anyone would in that situation and picked some sort of glass ornament up and hit the burglar over the head (not sure if he killed him or not). Turns out the news story was all about what was going to happen to the pensior when all he was doing was protecting his house & more importantly himself and his wife.
