Moving away from religion etc for a moment...
I don't think Britain has lost it's identity for such things as Blackpool, fish and chips, London, The Queen etc.

Although, we were once known for posh accents, good manners, and tea.
Now we're known for obesity, drunks, ill mannered people, swearing, common accents and single mums etc.

I do believe there's a great deal of freedom over here though in comparison to other countries...even more so than America. Mainly because America lives by the idea of the American Dream, which means a lot more of what people do over there is still classed as wrong.
