I think Paul probably thought Sarah was popular before that, given shes the most famous one there. And also, Paul seems to know his BBs and will know that the audience reaction seems to mean nothing a lot of the time. AND Paul and Sarah had made up before she was cheered, but no doubt their truce will now be explained as 'he heard her cheers'
