But being from a rural part of the country, I guess I'd built up an idea that factions and local communities in London being so race-specific or religion-specific would sort of result in a prototype of Israel on a much smaller scale... not that I was expecting to have to head into London with a hard hat and some kevlar armour or anything, but I'm just from such a sheltered background that it seemed like that was a nightmare waiting to happen.

The situation in Israel is basically due to the inevitable Muslim-Jew conflict. The Jewish community itself is quite level headed and their "areas" around the world are mostly friendly and far from fearsome/uncomfortable to walk in. That's including Israel tbh.
