War-torn Syria clinch last-minute World Cup play-off after playing home games 14,000 miles away

An injury time equaliser in kept Syria's World Cup qualification dream alive.

Omar Al Somah fired home in the 93th minute to seal an unlikely draw 2-2 and a play-off place.

Iran, managed by former Manchester United assistant Carlos Queiroz, had already qualified for World Cup 2018 without even conceding a goal.

But the visitors took a shock lead through a Tamer Haj Mohamad header before Iran surged 2-1 ahead.

However, visiting supporters at the Azadi Stadium in Tehran were in dreamland with the late equaliser which sealed third spot in Group A of Asian Qualifying.

War-ravaged Syria will now face either Australia or Saudi Arabia in a two-legged play-off in October.
