He shouldn't be main villain for too much longer tbf... if they're following the comics vaguely then Team Rick will win soon and other villains will be introduced. However...

In the comics they don't kill Negan, they keep him locked up for ages in a cell and he eventually escapes, then comes back, but now appears to be on some sort of redemption arc where Rick is allowing him to live at an outpost (monitored) and Negan is trying to convince them that he's changed and wants to fight alongside Rick
