Although the miners' strike was a few years earlier, 1984 so don't know if it was anything to do with that.
Coal is a dirty energy source. Reusable energy is the way forward. Closing down the coalmines was inevitable but she didn't just close down the coal mines, she closed down the industries too and she did all this without a backup plan. She basically left the North with a small handful of pits and no real industry.
