My husband is 6 foot 3 and manages to not do it. Though there seems to be more space on the metro than there are on the trains in those photos
I have actually started fighting back against them which is quite fun. When they sit then try to spread I will push my legs also, and I have won a few of these battles to much signing and moaning from the person who wanted to spread. I lose most of them though as most men are stronger than me by nature

At the end of the day the only way to stop innapropriate behaviour is to stand up and be counted so good job.
I once had a guy fall asleep on my shoulder on a train. I was only sixteen at the time and he was a much older businessman type. I felt very uncomfortable and just pulled away in the end which startled him and he just sat up properly. Bloody cheek though. I would say something now.
