Well, the new path was the Gladio/Ignis one, in which you control Gladio, it has a lot more lore in it, I think they kept the Noctis path so it didn't seem like they were 'deleting' part of the game. Also, the ring used to be super weak, and the enemies would take ages to kill, which made the stealth/survival horror thing more important. But it went on too long, so they boosted the ring to make that part of the game faster.
