Yeah, they'll host screenings for Academy members and the like to get the film on the board and press screenings to build up hype.

A sizable chunk of voters won't even get round to see all of the nominees so having the press big up a film increases it's chances since those kind of voters tend to go whichever way the wind is blowing and will be swayed by whatever film is considered the favourite plus you got old attitudes that tend to favour old themes. Films about either World War will always get nominated, if the Academy can find a reason to nominate Meryl Streep they will etc etc.
