I agree that retiring without multiple hobbies is probably a bad idea. As is retiring if you like your job. But if your job is overly stressful or boring, you get no enjoyment out of it, and you can afford it, then retire ASAP
[edit] Oh and of course, company is important too, I wouldn't recommend anyone leaving work if they get social interaction there and lack it elsewhere. Too many sad ol' chaps in the shop for hours putting on 20p bets, spending maybe £4 all day, because they're only really there for the company of other regulars  . Although there are loads of them and they've all known each other for decades so I have no idea why they don't just go and do something ELSE sometimes  .

My old man was never happier working and speaking to people, he semi retired and worked at the Wallace Monument for years speaking to tourists and telling them all about Stirling, he loved it, he hated having to give it up.
