I had pretty bad toothache recently...I got to the point that id almost rather die than live with the pain anymore. Toothache is seriously underated in terms of intense pain if it's your wisdom teeth, as they're larger and more rooted into your nervous system.
Anyhow, one thing I did pick up was to grind down a pain killer [any paracetemol will do.] preferably by placing one in a bowl and bashing it with something =] maybe a wooden spoon.
Then wet your finger by licking it, and place your finger in the grinded painkiller and it'll stick to your finger.
Then place your finger in your mouth and rub it over the tooth/gum that is hurting. The saliva turns it into paste and it'll set into your tooth.
This even helped my wisdom tooth pain disappear for a short while, so a regular toothache/minor toothache might disappear for even longer. I thought painkillers had to be swallowed in order to take effect, but it seems rubbing them over a sore tooth takes the pain away too..and much quicker/better.
