I think comps are important for getting influence.
The social game aspect is limited by petty aspects concerning just what kind of cast it is and whether it suits someone or not. For instance Will looks like an immature brat, but they think he's absolutely charming in there because of the kind of cast they put together.
And social manipulation is vastly overrated by live feed fans. They forget that everyone has a mind of their own and that cast members are put in there who are weak minded to enabled people who are stronger minded to dominate more. It's not some social genius at work at all, it's all about the how the cast is made up.
BB as a social experiment is more relevant even in this format, except that it tends to highlight how petty and shallow people are. It's the kind of thing that makes Big Brother look lame eventually.
