I've never had one stolen, but they've repaired one of our cans (the bar broke off where the truck has to lift it)... took them a week or so, we had to keep it empty at the curb...
I keep a big round thick plastic bin that has ropes on the ends so that we can carry, that I drilled holes in and we keep outside... the rain helps to wash the plastics, weigh down cardboard, etc
They explicitly state they'll take wet paper/cardboard, that moisture is not as much of an issue as food contaminate...
