Default Entertaining?

What makes a HM or even Big Brother as a whole entertaining to you?

Do you like the more bitchy hm's, arguing, fighting or do you prefer calmer hm's, that enjoy having some fun?

I personally love to watch how all the different personalities interact with each other, friendships forming, how they handle the different situations that crop up or the way they work together doing tasks and seeing who is a selfish twat or who does what they can to help others in the house, I don't mind some arguing but when it's constantly ongoing and bringing down everyone else in there then I think that's the point that it stops being entertaining and becomes a chore to watch, especially if it starts causing other hm's to not want to be there any longer.

For me a good story, a Winner who actually had a major part in the show, Downfall of the villain, no showmances, gripping evictions. Sadly I haven't had that since BB6.

A housemate that hasn't been seen before (or rather, isn't exactly like someone seen before). I can generally find something interesting in all housemates (unless I take an active dislike to them), but generally speaking the best series for me have had a lot of feuds and arguments (BB6, 5, 7).

Just... housemates with character and no holds barred.

Funny moments, Tasks, Generally seeing how people interact like what it use to be, the experiment side of it

Don't like the fighting. or continuous bitchy fighting. Funny fighting can be alright, like Marcus vs Dave in BB10

General tension/bitchiness is what i strive for.

Ideally two separate groups who have disdain for each other and are plotting against each other.

I like a good mix of everything - funny friendly moments, bitching and arguments, watching the HMs interact and cope with different situations etc.

I think its all important for a series to be really addictive.

I like trying to read the HMs also, probably the Psychology student in me.

In agree with that but I hate seeing kissing or under the sheets activity. If I wanna see that I'll go to a porn site. Not that I would.

I prefer the bitching and arguing, but then when I see someone come in and calm it down, I find myself drawn to them.

I think overall the house needs people like Speidi, the Shannon twins to really mix it up.

I also love the pranksters in there, like Jedward, Aaron (last year)

It's the free riders I can't do with.

Indeed.

Aaron was an under-rated HM last series, he did A LOT for viewing pleasure IMO.

BB make their money from people voting for who they hate, that's why they've probably reverted back to it this year

People voting for someone because they find them entertaining and they want them to stay is never going to get anywhere near the same kind of voting

Unique housemates, pranksters, sly HM's that spread lies, ones that can put up a good argument and housemates that are generally funny without trying to be and ones that try to do things whether its chat up a girl and fail and are funny to laugh at.

*cue annual post from me detailing the same old stuff*

Anything that causes discussion, basically. That's entertainment. This show thrives on debate, I stress this so much every series but it's essential that the housemates are providing talking points, without them nobody would be interested. It's word of mouth that keeps this show alive, be it discussions at work or in school, on forums like these, on BOTS (spin-off shows couldn't exist if there wasn't stuff to talk about), on social media, etc etc. That's what keeps Big Brother going, as soon as there's nothing much to talk about and debate you end up with viewers becoming largely apathetic and then viewing figures will inevitably decline, we see it series after series and there is a correlation, I don't care how anyone tries to spin it.

For that reason, it is generally feuds, arguments and bitching that causes the most discussion. But it can be a number of other things too; relationships, friendships, alliances, all sorts of things. But it has to be a storyline. Housemates that sit in the garden with a cup of tea talking about what their favourite animals are doesn't spark discussions and it isn't riveting TV. Housemates having a full blown argument about a contentious issue however, now that causes loads of discussions (case in point - Gina and Sallie tonight). This is where it gets a bit more complex though - whilst it's great to discuss and debate the arguments, who's right, who's wrong, who's a total ******, who should side with who etc etc (you can see what I mean about different topics of debate arising from arguments), people need to separate housemates and people, because they are two separate entities. As an example, I hate Gina as a person, she has so many traits that I despise in a person and there's no way I would associate with her in the real world, but I'm not associating with her, I'm watching her on an entertainment TV show and she is causing numerous discussions, and for my favourite show that can only be a good thing because it keeps it alive and keeps viewers interested. Thus, she is an excellent housemate and should stay the distance. The point I'm making is that as long as whilst people are debating the in-house issues they can remain objective and think 'well this is how I see it, but all the housemates involved should remain for the benefit of the show and to cause more of these debates', then it's fine.

At the end of the day, this is an entertainment show with a social experiment element at its heart. To keep it interesting you have to keep the characters, the ones that are causing people to discuss the stuff going on inside the house. We're the viewers, we aren't living with them and it's important people remember that. I'd hate to live with Gina, but I'm not...I'm watching her. I'd love to live with someone like Hira, but I wasn't...I was watching her, and she caused no discussions. The best way to tell if a housemate is good value or not is to check how many threads and debates have been started by them, the more the better. If you have very little against your name it means you aren't really much worth to the show and any fan should be doing their best to get their ass out of the door.

Not sure why I still watch it tbh, growing up I watched it because I thought the people on the show were really cool and I guess I looked up to them and want to know how they would react in the various social situations. Now I feel I should go on the show and give back lol. this is the first series ive watched were ive thought I could go in there and be a huge character.

..just everything you said really but I do wish in a way that Channel 5 had changed the name of it as well, so we wouldn't keep comparing it because I think that 'Big Brother' as such ended on Channel 4 and this is a new type reality show, much like Towie, Geordie Shaw, Made in Chelsea etc where it's all kind of staged or in this case, carefully edited with only the arguments/bitchiness etc..those are what are deemed to be the most entertaining, rather than watch them all drink tea and chatting about nothings..for me, it's just another reality show like that..but they have given us a bit of live feed as well this year, so it does feel as though it's a little more 'Big Brother' again...they have still chosen more conflicting/attention seeking/me me me housemates though....

Fights and arguments are the best bits of BB. The rest in between are boring.

After Jack speech there's not much to add.

I like people who bring something to the house. I'm not a lover of 'drama' HM's but I appreciate what they bring and hope they stay for as long as possible.

Its an indefinable something., A je ne sais quoi but I know it when you see it.

Arguments, arguments and arguments are all I want. I'm surprised there's such a debate about that. Forget funny stuff and house mates going on a journey, that's all rubbish
