John is an actually awful human being
He was all over that whole business like a vampire on a vein. He's so opportunistic and manipulative and I'd say that he's the main person responsible for that situation getting as bad as it did. Tiffany was a twat, not making excuses for her but he led the witch hunt against her and then goaded a further reaction by going after her and winding her up further.
That situation would have calmed down if it weren't for him stirring the pot, he was using the situation to his advantage which is far more disgusting than anything else that happened then.
