Default Brain power

Found this quite amusing:

At a hospital, relatives gathered in the waiting room where a family member lay gravely ill. Finally, the doctor came in. Looking tired and serious, he said, “I’m afraid I’m the bearer of bad news. The only hope left for your loved one at this time is a brain transplant. It’s an experimental procedure. You will have to pay for the brain yourselves.”

The family members sat silent until someone finally asked, “How much does a brain cost?” The doctor quickly responded, “$5000 for a male brain, and $200 for a female brain.”

The moment turned awkward as the men in the room tried not to smile. One man, unable to control his curiosity, blurted out the question everyone wanted to ask, “Why is the male brain so much more expensive?” The doctor smiled and said, “It’s just standard pricing procedure. We have to mark down the price of the female brains because they’ve been used.”

All kidding aside, let’s answer this age old question by evaluating what we know up to this point, scientifically as well as culturally. Are women really superior to men? Research confirms that the brains of men and women are somewhat different. Studies show that human male brains are, on average, approximately 10% larger than female brains. Certain brain areas in women, however, contain more nerve cells. Paying special attention to the amount of ‘grey matter’ (the part of the brain that allows us to think), researchers wanted to know if women have as much grey matter as men, or more, to makeup for the smaller brains. It was proven that women have 55.4% grey matter verses 50.8% in men.

I found it highly amusing too.

Love to know the source of your figures but hey lets say it is accurate.

You admit men have a 10% larger brain.

The average brain is 1.5kg. so lets use that for a female brain, that means the equivalent male brain is 1.65kg.

Therefore grey matter in the female brain = 1.5 x 55.4% = 0.831kg
grey matter in the male brain = 1.65 x 50.8% = 0.8382kg

Oh look, using your own figures men have more grey matter than women.

If your basing it off proportion, yes, it would be a valid assumption.

Well I'm sure it's from a highly distinguished scientific journal.

See, this article is based on buzz, to make people like you post it to people like us. But it's not really scientific at all. Because that would be assuming bigger = better which is not always the case.

The case is how this grey matter is utilized. A large area of grey matter may still have a low level of chemical synapse activity and vice versa. The functioning of it also depends on the effectiveness it's own components (cortex, deep nuclei) and where these components are interacting with [Spinal Chord, for instance. Or wherever the axioms transmitting neurological bits and bobs are connecting to].

It's a bit like King Kong, you see. He was huge but ultimately he was a bit stupid.

Of course I cut and pasted it - didn't say any different! That is after all what all on here do - seeing as none of us are research experts!

I am not saying there is anything wrong with doing it, just saying if you provide the original source people can see where the information comes from, the authority for the evidence and the context in which it was offered. They can then draw their own conclusions.

It also satisfies most authors for copyright and credit purposes.

Wombai you are proving many points that we're made in your previous Feminist post's

As Arista said The sexes are not equal.

Different strengths and weaknesses, born from different physical and mental hardware.

An Army of Men would beat an Army of Women

An Group of Female Nurses would beat a Group of Male nurses

Natures idea is that are strengths are shared

Previously Women had no right to vote, this was clearly descriminatory, because Women had as much intelligence as Men so could vote intelligently.
And things changed. But the momentum born from the Suffragette's has continued into areas of Gender roles. Clearly Men are Bias towards physical roles and Women are bias towards Emotional(attach no negative connotations here) Roles.

Examples of Male bias Roles:
Police Officer
Fire Fighter
Father
Soldier
Builder

Examples of Female Bias Roles:
Nurse
Mother
Social Worker
Carer

Examples of Equal bias:
Everything else

Not to say a Woman can't be a Soldier, or a man can't be a Nurse, they can, but from the point of view of effectiveness at doing the job -

An Army of Men would beat an Army of Women

A Group of Female Nurses would beat a Group of Male nurses

I think most everyone understands and agree's with this point but, find dis-agreement in the idea a Woman can come along who stands out above all other Woman and can compete with a majority of Men, which is true.
Florence Griffith-Joyne ran a 100 metre of 10.49 seconds in 1988 She is still the fastest Woman ever. At the Beijing Olympics Mens 100 mtr's with that time she would of missed out by 3 seconds as a fastest loser to qualify for the Final, beating many Men. But she was a freak, the exception that breaks the rule, a pearl in an ocean of rocks.

The Extreme Feminist Movement, by pushing there right to do any job a man does has stupidly forced, The Police Force to search for these exceptions, and when they can't be found! The result is..............

I just realized this is slightly off point

Maybe Women are slightly more intelligent, my Mum always beats my Dad at Monopoly so.

Yes - men and women are different in many ways - never said they weren't - too many idiots on here have put words in my mouth - although they also have a lot more in common that some would have us believe - but the end result is that they are equal - and should be treated so. I have never said any different - just defended women from a lot of unfair female stereotyping and name-calling from members on this forum. Do you honestly see something wrong with that?

What are you talking about! The reason women aren't aloud to fight in the British Army - is based on physical strength - got bugger all to do with grey matter!

I do think the grey matter amount in the brain doesn't mean very much because we use our brain in a different way and it depends the way we use it. It's been proved men can't do 2 things at the time contrary to women. However, women aren't very good at positioning in the space, while men have a natural tendency of orienting themselves. Women are better at accounting than men but men are better negotiators and sellers. etc...

Both sexes are equally intelligent, not denying it, but in some fields, woman dominate men and vice versa.
