England won 165 medals at the last games according to this. Medals are bit easier to come by in the Commonwealths than in the Olympics... even Scotland won 30.

Its a good event. Mainly because we are actually one of the strongest nations there, along with the Aussies.
I enjoy the athletics the most, but the boxing is also good craic. Its just a shame its on at an awkward time. |

Carry triumphs in 400m freestyle
Carry's win was Scotland's second gold in the pool David Carry scooped a second gold of the day for Scotland with a brilliant win in the men's 400m freestyle. Carry, 24, held off a late challenge from Canada's Andrew Hurd to win in a time of three minutes, 48.17 seconds. Welshman David Davies led after 200m, but faded slightly in the later stages to take the bronze. Meanwhile, Liam Tancock almost broke the 50m backstroke world record in qualifying fastest for the final while fellow Englishman Matt Clay qualified. "To have done something like that in this kind of environment is incredible - it's the stuff dreams are made of," Carry told the BBC. Carry's triumph followed fellow Scot Caitlin McClatchey's victory in the women's 200m - the first swimming final of the Games. Scot McClatchey wins gold in 200m Australia have traditionally dominated the men's 400m, but finished out of the medals after world record holder Ian Thorpe and reigning world champion Grant Hackett both withdrew from the Games. Craig Stevens, who was called up last week when Thorpe pulled out due to illness, finished fourth. Aberdonian Carry returned to the pool to anchor Scotland's 4x100m relay team but they could only manage fifth, one place behind England. World record holders South Africa held off Australia in a thrilling finish to take gold, with Canada in third. Swimming skills: Learn the strokes Moss Burmester, of New Zealand, took gold in the men's 200m butterfly in a Games record of one minute, 56.54 secs. Australians Travis Nederpelt and Joshua Krogh took silver and bronze. England's Matthew Bowe was sixth and Ian Powell of Guernsey finished eighth. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/comm...es/4811746.stm |

Scot McClatchey wins gold in 200m
McClatchey won bronze in the 400m at the World Championships Scotland's Caitlin McClatchey beat Australian swimming star Libby Lenton to win a sensational gold medal in the pool in the women's 200m freestyle. The 20-year-old overhauled favourite Lenton, who had been targeting a record of seven golds, in the final metres to win the race in a new Games record. McClatchey finished in one minute 57.25 seconds with Lenton back in 1:57.21. England's Mel Marshall took bronze in an impressive swim while her compatriot Joanne Jackson was sixth. It means so much to win a gold medal for Scotland Caitlin McClatchey Lenton, a specialist sprinter, led when they turned for the final length. But she was unable to hold off the fast-finishing Scot who had been third all the way but darted home to grab the gold a year after she won a bronze medal over 400m at last year's World Championships. Afterwards Lenton, who admitted she'd "never heard of the Scottish girl before now", insisted she was happy with her performance. "A lot of people expected me to win but at the end of the day this is my first individual 200m swim at an international meet so I'm really, really happy." Carry triumphs in 400m freestyle With David Carry winning gold in the men's 400m freestyle, it was a dream start for Scotland. The Scots have already bettered their gold medal haul at the 2002 Manchester Games where Alison Sheppard claimed the nation's only title in the 50m freestyle. Politics student McClatchey, who goes for gold again in her specialist 400m on Monday, said: "It means so much to win a gold medal for Scotland. "It's just fantastic. I didn't expect to win the 200m. I didn't even see Caitlin coming but a nicer person couldn't have won Mel Marshall "I knew Libby and Mel were going to go out hard and finish strongly so I just tried to stay on their shoulders and come back at them at the end." Marshall said she paid the price for going too fast over the first 50m. "I would have liked to have done better than bronze but I am happy with a medal," she said. "I didn't even see Caitlin coming but a nicer person couldn't have won." With David Carry winning gold in the men's 400m freestyle, it was a dream start for Scotland. The Scots have already bettered their gold medal haul at the 2002 Manchester Games where Alison Sheppard claimed the nation's only title in the 50m freestyle. Swimming skills: Mark Foster's sprint challenge Australia's women delivered the goods with a clean sweep in the 200m individual medley. Stephanie Rice took gold in a new Games record of two minutes, 12.90 secs ahead of favourite Brooke Hanson and Lara Carroll, with England's Terri Dunning a commendable fourth. Scotland's Hannah Miley was seventh and Wales' Julie Gould eighth. Dunning had earlier failed to qualify for the final of the 50m butterfly, as did team-mate Rosalind Brett, Scot Stephanie Hill and Wales' Jemma Lowe. Kate Haywood of England and Wales' Lowri Tynan missed out on the final of the 50m breaststroke, where an Australian one-two-three looks on the cards http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/comm...es/4811710.stm |

England scored a psychological blow over bitter rivals Australia in the rugby sevens with a 14-12 group win.
England topped their group after three straight victories and face Samoa in Friday's quarter-finals. Australia who qualified in second meet South Africa. Wales came second in their group to New Zealand and play Fiji in the quarters, but Scotland are out after losing two of their three group matches. Favourites New Zealand take on Canada in the other quarter-final. Australia dominated the early exchanges of the battle with England, Chris Latham opening the scoring after Tom Varndell failed to latch on to a speculative cross-kick. Aussie winger Brendan Williams was sin-binned for abusing the referee, but England struggled to force home the advantage in the first half. RUGBY SEVENS QUARTER-FINALS: New Zealand v Canada South Africa v Australia England v Samoa Fiji v Wales All matches to be played Friday Henry Paul had a great chance on the stroke of half-time, but spilled a low Mathew Tait pass. Latham then produced two try-saving tackles on Tait and Varndell early in the second-half. But he could not prevent England captain Simon Amor powering through for a well-worked try. With the score tied at 7-7 and Australia's Damon Murphy yellow-carded for not rolling away at a ruck, England upped the pressure and Varndell motored past Williams with ease for a try. Australia's Cameron Shepherd hit back with a late try, but Williams' conversion fell short to give England the win. The Welsh went down 35-10 in their opening Pool A match against New Zealand, but recovered to win comfortably over both Kenya and Namibia. Scotland won easily against minnows Niue, but lost a crucial contest 10-7 to Canada after just failing to cross the line in a last-minute move, before being well-beaten 33-7 by gold medal contenders Fiji. Elsewhere, Sri Lanka got a harsh welcome to rugby sevens conceding 11 tries in 14 minutes in their 73-0 defeat to Australia. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/comm...es/4813122.stm |

England's men's basketball team opened their Commonwealth Games campaign with a battling Pool A win over Barbados.
Leading 35-29 at the break, coach Peter Scantlebury's side slipped back to trail by 53-47 in the second half before clinching a 75-59 victory. Forward Fab Flournoy was forced to leave the court after receiving a blow to face but should be fit for England's next match with New Zealand. England's women beat Mozambique 84-46 in their opening Pool C clash. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/comm...es/4813316.stm |

The swimming is enjoyable at these Games, mainly because we are doing well.
The real stuff starts tonight, with the athletics, including the best event, the mens 100 metres. |
