Simon Pegg has revealed that the sequel to Star Trek could start shooting by as early as the end of the year.

The 40-year-old, who plays engineer Scotty in the sci-fi franchise reboot, admitted that he has been nagging director J.J. Abrams to kickstart work on the second movie.

He told Empire: "I bug J.J. on a regular basis and he just fobs me off. But I saw Zoe Saldana recently and she reckons that it's going to be soon.

"I would imagine it'll be toward the end of the year, but I can't guarantee it."

However, actor Zachary Quinto - who portrays Vulcan Spock - has previously affirmed that he wants two years away from the franchise.

The as-yet-untitled update is expected for release in 2012.
