Default Night Street Lights Turned Off - Thats a Good thing

In parts of England some councils are saving Big Money
and cutting their Carbon footprint.

In Somerset they Turn off Street Lights after Midnight.
(Ref: BBC1 this morning)

I think alll Councils that can do this - should.

There are no street lights where I live. You ought to see the stars...

I built-up areas I understand the plan is to dim the lights, and to use downlighters. I don't think streetlights necessarily stop people being attacked, I think the darkness just makes people more frightened.

Would be good if they could do this everywhere but it'll just encourage crimes.

How doesn't it?

If there is no light outside theres bound to be an increase in muggings and burglaries because people will think they have a better chance of getting away.

They've been doing this in my area for a while now. I like it, not many people use the roads after 1am, so why have the street lights on?

Because criminals operate more easily under the cover of darkness? I'm completely against this idea, I was assaulted after midnight and was able to identify my attacker because I could see his face, thanks to street lighting. If that hadn't been there I would have had no closure and he would have faced no repercussions.

They may operate more easily, but if a criminal is intent on committing crime, then they will commit it regardless of light or darkness. People generally shouldn't be walking the streets in the darkness at 1am - 5am. I go for walks at that time, but know that I am putting myself in danger. The amount of energy that is wasted during those hours is unneeded in my opinion.

I do, however, feel sorry for you that you were one of the unlucky ones who got attacked.
