This rather legendary tale only came to my attention last week
when new labour enforced their mayoral plan and peter mandelson on the good people of hartlepool, they decided to not take it lying down they put up as an independent candidate, club mascot , (h)angus the monkey known as hangus because the legend goes that the hartlepool leaders found a monkey at sea during world war 2 and came to the rather bizarre conclusion that he was a german spy...so they hung the primate on the seafront, where a statue remains to the spirit of the poor wrongly accused monkey, the townsfolk became known as the monkey-hangers. so in memory of him the mascot was named angus (a clever play on the fact he was hanged/hung)...so angus came to the rescue to fight off mandelson and won by a landslide on a platform of free bananas for school kids.....after finding the first few weeks hard going when being chased by paparazzi dressed in gorrilla suits, hangus (real name stuart drummond) soon settled in and won 3 elections and lasted 10 years as mayor....and I thought my town was "bananas" lol hes now gloriously retired from the mayoral game and back to his monket suit where hes recently been running from the club ground to the training pitch 17 miles away to raise money for cancer if anyone has more info on this monkey tale please let us know more of his deeds talk about monkey magic ![]() ![]() Last edited by the truth; 04-03-2013 at 05:07 PM. |

..my dad told me that story of the monkey being hanged in Hartlepool...I think it was the Napoleonic Wars though and they thought he was a French spy lol..I guess to them the French were like aliens and they didn't know what they looked like, so they thought he was a French spy who didn't respond to being questioned..I don't know if it actually was a monkey though..it could have been a cabin boy who didn't understand the language...but that wouldn't sound quite as 'gimmicky'....
