Hit ITV drama Broadchurch is to be remade for a US audience, Fox has announced.

The drama about the mysterious death of an 11-year-old boy was a ratings hit for ITV earlier in the year and won critical acclaim.

Filming on the US version will begin in January to be aired next year, while the UK version will premiere on BBC America in the US on 7 August.

Chris Chibnall, who created the drama will write the first episode.

Chibnall will act as executive producer on the American show but there has been no announcement about casting.

Fox entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly said it was "lucky to be able to bring a new version of this mystery to the US audience".

"Broadchurch is the kind of storytelling that grabs your attention and keeps you riveted with every minute - which is exactly what we look for in an event series," he said.

Olivia Colman starred as detective sergeant Ellie Miller alongside David Tennant as detective inspector Alec Hardy, investigating the death of Danny Latimer in a fictional seaside town.

The climax of the investigation, which was screened in April, was watched by a peak audience of 8.9 million viewers.

ITV immediately announced it had been commissioned for a second series.

David Tennant is set to star in the US remake of Broadchurch.

Tennant starred as DI Alec Hardy in the UK version of the show opposite Olivia Colman's DS Ellie Miller. Aired on ITV over March and April of this year, it followed the hunt for the killer of an 11-year-old boy found dead on a Dorset beach and was a huge hit, drawing a massive audience of over 10 million for its final episode.

It was revealed last month that a US reworking of the show was in the pipeline, with creator Chris Chibnall serving as executive producer, and TV Guide now reports that Tennant will once again take on the male lead in Fox's adaptation.

The US version, which also has the working title of Broadchurch, is set to debut during Fox's 2014-15 season and will relocate the action from the original's quiet English seaside town to a picturesque coastal resort in the US. Fox executive Kevin Reilly said in a press statement: "Broadchurch is the kind of storytelling that grabs your attention and keeps you riveted with every minute – which is exactly what we look for in an event series. We love the layered characters, we've seen how well-received it's been in the UK, and we're lucky to be able to bring a new version of this mystery to the US audience."

Pointless, Dr Who and Downton Abbey have shown that US audiences aren't allergic to English accents like Hollywood seems to think they are so if they're gonna cast the same godamn people in the roles then they might as well save themselves some money and just show the original because the US viewing audiences aren't stupid like the networks think they are

I don't mind remakes as long as they aren't copy and paste jobs, the US Shameless, for example, is pretty good because (aside from the first few episodes) they did their own thing with it and it stood apart from the original.
