Default Female suicide bomber kills 15 in Russia's Volgograd

Quote:
At least 15 people were killed in a blast at a railway station in the city of Volgograd, southern Russia. A female suicide bomber is suspected to have carried out the attack, says the National Anti-terrorism Committee.

“According to verified information, the explosion at the railway station in Volgograd has claimed 15 lives," Russia's Investigative Committee said.

Another 34 were injured, 8 of them more critically, including a girl of 9. The child has been taken to a local hospital. Her mother died in the blast, according to the Committee.

At the same time, the Health Ministry confirms that 45 people have been taken to hospital.

The incident is being treated as an act of terrorism, the committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said.

The blast took place at 12.45 local time inside the building of the railway. It is "thought to have been carried out by a female suicide bomber," according to the anti-terrorism committee's statement.

“At 12.45 we got informed that a boom or a blast was heard in the building of the railway station, Volgograd-1. Smoke was reported,” Svetlana Smolyaninova, a police spokesperson said, according to RIA Novosti.

The power of the explosion at Volgograd’s station was equivalent to at least 10 kg TNT, according to Markin. The explosive device was stuffed with pieces of scrap metal. The Committee said that an undetonated F-1 grenade was also found at the scene.

Interfax’s source said that “the blast happened near the metal detectors located at the entrance to the station.”

The Committee think a female suicide bomber detonated the bomb when she saw a police officer while approaching the metal detector.

The bomber’s identity has not been established yet. A genetic examination has been ordered.

At the same time, a source in the law enforcement department in Russia’s Republic of Dagestan has confirmed to RIA Novosti news agency that, according to preliminary information, Oksana Aslanova carried out the attack.

She is said to have been married twice to two militants. Both of her husbands have been reportedly eliminated, according to LifeNews TV channel, which didn't disclose its sources. Aslanova is also said to be a close friend of Naida Asiyalova, also known as ‘Amaturahman,’ who was behind the attack in Volgograd in October, when six were killed and 30 injured.

Sad news is just as relevant as Christmas, I'd rather it be posted than ignored.

Strange for terrorism to occur as far north as Volgograd, generally speaking it just seems to be contained to the Caucasus region near the border with Azerbaijan/Georgia... Dagestan, Chechnya, Ingushetia...

I understand that Russia will never let go of those republics but it just seems so ridiculous to keep a hold of them. They want to be independent. Russia will never crush that spirit. These attacks will keep happening until they get what they want, and Russia isn't prepared to let it happen. It doesn't help that you have parts of Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia wanting to be part of Russia... the whole region is a mess, politically speaking.

Closer to home the Ukraine is similarly divided with some wanting closer ties with Europe and others who think the sun shines out of Putin's arse.

I studied a really interesting course about Russian foreign policy, it was fascinating talking about Kievan Rus' and how many Russians cannot comprehend that the Ukraine is a separate country; Kiev is where Russia was born essentially and it's alien to them that Russia doesn't include Kiev. They were offering some seriously good deals to Ukraine to stop them heading towards Europe, lots of oil and gas deals etc... pretty mental.

Have you seen that banned Georgian Eurovision entry We Don't Wanna Put In? So funny up there with the Ukrainian one by Verka Serduchka, so politically charged!

It's not really to do with religion, it's more that the southern republics don't identify with being Russian and want independence. The dissolution of the USSR wasn't a particularly logical break up; they let the Baltic States go free but wouldn't relinquish other areas that wanted out. They let the -stan republics go in Central Asia but more or less still have control over all of them, although China's starting to influence some of them with oil and gas trade for Chinese goods... Russia really fascinates me, it kind of strikes me as a circus act trying to spin plates and keep them all going while trying to show off to the US.
