CORRIE veteran Barbara Knox has been released on bail after being arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

Barbara – who has played Rita Tanner on Corrie for more than 40 years – was being driven home by her daughter Maxine Ashcroft, 56, when they were pulled over by police.

Maxine was taken to the police station after taking a breathalyser test, where she was allegedly found to be almost three times over the legal limit.

And when Barabara later went to the station to demand her daughter's release, police suspected she had driven to the station under the influence of alcohol and arrested her.

Barabara, 80, reportedly yelled at cops: "Do you know who I am?"


A source told The Mirror: "Barbara wasn't happy her daughter had been arrested.

"She kept yelling, 'Do you know who I am?'

"She turned up at the police station knocking the door and demanding her daughter be released.

"But the officers suspected she had driven to the station herself so they arrested her as well."

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "Police stopped a car in Hollow Lane in Knutsford.

"A 56-year-old woman from Gloucestershire was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

"An 80-year-old woman from Knutsford later arrived at Knutsford Police Station and was also arrested on suspicion of drink-driving."

Barbara has been released on bail pending further enquiries while Maxine is set to appear at Macclesfield magistrates court on Wednesday.

A Coronation Street spokeswoman said: "This is a personal and private matter."
