I don't know if there is a recommened amount, but I currently have 6 internet windows open, as well as 2 Microsoft Word Documents, Notepad, Microsoft Outlook and an Accounts package I use.

I regularly have more than this.

I would presume it would depend on the spec of your machine and also what programs you have open as some things use more memory than others.

Yeah as LEE said, there isn't really a maximum

It slows your computer down if you have too many open though..

Sometimes I have 8/9 depending on what I'm doing - my computer can just cope with that + WMP open

I have 22 open!

They are Opera 6 browser, 3 MS Word documents, Notepad, Wordweb (dictionary), VirtualDub (video editing), MS Excel, AVG Anti Virus, Nero, Apache and 9 Explorer windows.

ZoneAlarm, DSL program and resource meter are also running - I use this to check if I've got too much on the go at one time.

Mines a Packard bell IMEDIA 5070 something or other with Pentium 4.2 GHz, 256MB RAM
40GB, etc, etc.

IfI had the vaguest idea what any of that meant, I might also be able to master this bloody SPSS statistics programme and get my assignment done. AAAAAAAARgh!!
