An investigation was today launched into the cause of a dramatic pavement explosion in the West End.
Flames and thick black smoke spewed from a manhole outside BAFTA’s Piccadilly HQ following a series of small explosions said to have been sparked by an underground electrical fault at 11pm. Crowds of revellers gathered at a police cordon as a five-strong team of firemen dragged a white box-van away from the manhole to prevent flames from engulfing the vehicle. 'The Health and Safety Executive last year warned that Londoners were at risk of being killed as the number of pavement explosions, triggered when a gas leak is ignited by a spark underground. UK Power Networks, which distributes electricity in London, pledged to increase inspections of underground equipment after 29 incidents in 2013 which left several people in hospital. It has about 100,000 electrical link boxes in the capital serving 36,000 km of underground cable. The company has invested £40 million in making sure the city’s electrial supply is safe' http://www.standard.co.uk/news/londo...l?icn=ticker-1

'More than 2,000 people were evacuated from buildings along a main road in central London after an electrical fire sent thick black smoke billowing into the air. Ten fire engines and 70 firefighters were called to the scene in Kingsway, a busy north-south route through central London.
London fire brigade said it was called at around 12.40pm to a blaze in Holborn thought to have been caused by a faulty electrical junction box. It was brought under control at around 8.10pm.' http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2...ingsway-london http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/g...on-in-pictures

When I lived in Hackney in the late 70's and first moved to a terrace house in the area, a kind old guy who was passing by when I was moving my stuff in said to me; "Watch your step around here mate.". He had passed by before I could question him as to why, but I wish I had listened to him, because when I awoke next morning and went outside - someone had stolen my doorstep.
