Default Can some people explain American politics and elections to me?

So i might look like a dumbass here.
I don't usually get involved in American politics debates unless it's just opinions on Trump. This is because i don't really understand it.So how does it all work?
I pretty much know nothing.
Am i right in thinking that there are just two parties or sides and each side puts forward different candidates and each state votes for the candidate they want to go for the presidency?
Also please could you explain these terms to me(i am a total noob) -

Primaries

Caucuses

GOP

Thank you in advance.

All I know right now is that racists are rearing their ugly heads and voting for their leader.

Watching the Mexican fearful that Trump might win breaks my heart.

I was in the same position as you until a few weeks ago, but have self-taught myself all the necessary elements and think I have a fairly decent understanding now.

I would recommend these sites:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-35356941

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-35350890

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-15764542

Primaries are actual votes within states to elect leaders of a party, while caucuses are meetings and votes are counted by a show of hands.

The GOP stands for 'grand old party' which is the Republicans

This youtube channel is very good. As well as explaining primaries V caucuses and the electoral college, he goes thru each election upto 2012 and explains significant events in each election.

Yup like a Ted Cruz whose family background is immigration but he's against immigration. All the whites there are migrants tbh. Indigenous people want their land back.

That's true of every country except for western africa where we first evolved from apes. anyone from europe, asia, australia, south america and north america are all immigrants. so what? or do you think whoever got there first gets to claim it?

does that mean that America owns the moon?

...great thread idea NM...I guess the only thing that I'm baffled about..(and this is a serious question..)..with Donald Trump, why..?...I mean for us in the UK, I think all we see is someone who wants to build walls, someone who very much appears racist and of the Americans that I know, that wouldn't be a representation of their own beliefs to vote for someone like him who may even become their President...yet he's being voted for by many people and it's becoming a real possibility so I'm assuming that he has many other beliefs/policies etc that are quite positive but that we're not hearing about through our media....just why really....

I would think that
a) there are some people who actually agree with the things he's saying.

B)there are people who don't agree with his extreme views but do have concerns on immigration and there is nobody else who represent their views.

Luckily over here we have UKIP who are a fairly moderate party who are willing to tackle immigration in a fair way.If we did'nt have UKIP or a party like them we could end up with a Trump or BNP etc.Imo.

Thanks for all the replies

So the Primary Elections are to elect the candidates who will stand for President on the Republicans and Democrat sides. The GOP are the 'Grand old party'and is just another name for the republicans. There are only a few caucus states and they have meetings to elect their candidates in which they can put forward their points. They elect a candidate with a show of hands.
After the Primaries are the Conventions in which each side will reveal the candidates. Then on November 8th is the General Election. The whole process begins a year in advance.
This is what i understand so far.
