The Hammer horror films are going back into action.
Hammer Film Productions, famous for the raft of gothic horror movies made in the 1950s and 1960s, has been sold to Big Brother creator and Dutch media tycoon John de Mol.

Dracula - a cult figureThe team is planning to target a "new generation of horror lovers" via web and mobile technologies and is planning to put at least £25m into the kitty.

"We have been working on this deal for almost a year now and are very proud at having brought together this incredibly talented group of people in combination with Hammer's heritage," said key player Simon Oakes.

"Hammer is a great British brand and we intend to take Hammer back into production and develop its global potential."

Ingrid Pitt, who starred in many of Hammer's greatest hits and was dubbed 'The Queen of Horror' told Sky News: "It was always hard work, but it was wonderful and now it's got new owners it will be very interesting to see how it works out."

Ingrid Pitt: 'Queen of Horror'The new owners have also acquired the Hammer group's 295-strong title library, including Hammer House of Horror films such as Dracula.

The takeover marks the second time Hammer Film Productions has been sold to private equity investors - it was bought in February 2000 by a consortium including advertising supremo Charles Saatchi.

Hammer Film Productions was launched in January 1949 and built a name for itself in producing quality, low-budget films, many of which were shot at Bray Studios near Windsor.
