Shilpa Shetty has told Channel 4 News' Krishnan Guru-Murthy she would go to court over the controversy of her kiss with Richard Gere.

One of the people still making the headlines here in India is the Bollywood starlet Shilpa Shetty.

She's currently facing a summons after she was pictured being kissed by Richard Gere at an Aids benefit. She could be charged with offending Indian culture.

But the ripples from her big Brother victory in the UK still continue as well. And when I caught up with her I asked here if she still thought there hadn't been racism in the Big Brother house.

Shilpa Shetty: "It touched upon an issue that needed to be talked about in the open. That is a very important issue - an issue that we don't go through in our country. For me I live in India and I've only read about racism.

Krishnan Guru-Murthy: "Since you were a teenager attitudes in India must have changed. Is this a more liberal country now to how it was?

Shetty: "Definitely, definitely. I think the perception that people have of us in the West is of a very different India.

Media mileage

Guru-Murthy: "But you say it's more liberal and then people see all the fuss that goes on when you get kissed on the cheek by Richard Gere. That doesn't sound like a liberal country.

Shetty: "I don't want to believe that the sentiment of a lunatic fringe is the sentiment of my entire country. We are all in shock and I actually think it's ridiculous but we do respect the judiciary. I'm sure something great is going to even come out of this.

Guru-Murthy: "Can you explain how it happened that you get kissed on a stage in one part of the country and a judge somewhere at the other end of the country tells you to go to court?

Shetty: "More than anything else I think it's just someone trying to seek some media mileage at my cost, that's the way I'd like to put it.

Krishnan Guru-Murthy: "But basically anybody can go to court anywhere...

Shilpa Shetty: "Yes, we're living in a democracy...

Krishnan Guru-Murthy: "And say I think Shilpa's broken the law...

India's morality

Shetty: "That's often misused. I think it's been misused at this point in time.

KGM: "But you will go to court and defend yourself will you?

Shetty: "If they tell me to appear I will do it. As the lawyer tells me to react I will."

Guru-Murthy: "But you'd stand up for your rights?"

Shetty: "I still believe that I haven't done anything wrong. How can I be blamed for something like that? So if people felt that I should apologise, why would I? What have I done? If I didn't hold Richard while he bent me over I would have fallen. And I didn't kiss him, he kissed me - on my cheek! For crying out loud!

Guru-Murthy: "Do you think India's morality will ever be the same as the West?

Shetty: "People want to ape India now - the whole yoga thing and the whole ethnic culture - it's something we need to be proud of. So why would we want to ape the West?"

I am very glad that Shilpa Shetty is going to go to court and fight over this outrageous and unfair situation and the law that exists in India. Glad I don't live/visit there

Kissing is great and if a country's government and the majority of it's people can't accept something which is harmless, like a lovely kiss, then it should be fought out by a woman who is happy to NOW live in London, England.

nodisharmony:- Shilpa hadn't ever realised what racism was and many also don't understand racism and if they don't then they don't. Shilpa felt it needed to be spoke about in open, but she wasn't aware of the implications that followed. But three girls, certainly know!!!!

nodisharmony:- I am glad that Shilpa feels this way, as it is essential that she has a positive view of what's to come. A lovely court-case, attacking a very rich and popular-to-some Bollywood film actress and ex-CBB housemate, who is not above the law, but certainly a favourite, I am sure.

But I can assume that as long as it is NOT in a public place, then it is all okay.

I think it is very much about religion.

Religion dictates the laws in some countries.

How many of those people think american citizens visiting Britain should be allowed to carry firearms ? - because many many Americans think our firearms laws are stupid and their laws are better.

Do we expect OUR laws to be enforced in our country ?

Gere kiss charges dropped for Shilpa


Shilpa Shetty will not face legal action over a public kiss from Hollywood actor Richard Gere at a charity event last month.
Shilpa attended the premiere of her new movie with fellow Big Brother housemate Danielle Lloyd earlier this weekThe pair caused controversy in India when Pretty Woman star Richard openly planted kisses on Shilpa's cheek at an Aids awareness event.
Hindu nationalists were outraged after he twirled her in his arms, arched her over and kissed her several times.
However, it was Bollywood and Celebrity Big Brother star Shilpa who faced obscenity charges for not resisting the kiss.
But now India's Supreme Court has suspended all legal proceedings against her.
The 31-year-old's new film Life In A Metro premiered earlier this month and it sees the actress play a neglected housewife tempted by infidelity.
She said: "I think after a certain point in your career you want to really push the envelope and throw caution to the wind and I want to do something different."
She added: "I think it's a great opportunity, a great platform to see a different facet to Indian cinema."

But my observation is certainly more believable.

Watch and see and observe very closely.

Shilpa Shetty & Richard Gere are going to have a great future as actor & actress and also very popular & successful.

This small problem is going to go away and the Law won't matter, you'll see

Those who are employed to enforce the laws, can choose to break them, as & when they choose. There is a word for this and it begins with a "letter" of the alphabet. But it is never, never, never safe to say.

i dont think that was a racist comment more ignorant. i'm asian but i didnt take offence i just think ppl aren't aware. through laws like this the culture seems weird but there are many bits to everything just like any other country . im probs biased but i think its the best culture by far and its a shame noone else can understand it . or more clearly some ppl dont want to .
