I didn't even realise Tumblr had adult content, I thought it was just used as as somewhere for artists to post their stuff and for blogs.

[Its announcement comes just days after Tumblr was removed from Apple’s iOS App Store over child pornography issues.]

All because they can't be arsed to moderate and clamp down on child pornography. The site is long past its best. Shame because it's a great setup.

If they can’t do it with child porn what makes them think they’ll be able to do it with legal porn

They're getting rid of a good amount of their users. Like good on them for trying to get rid of all porn altogether but how are they gonna moderate that when they can't even get rid of children's nude pics, let alone every nude pic, legal or not

I don't know diddlysquat about technology so maybe someone else might be able to answer this - can't websites "recognise" a nude image, in the same way Facebook can suggest who to tag through facial recognition? Surely it's not too much of a leap for Tumblr's bots (or whatever) to "think" that there's too much skin in an upload, so it gets sent to a moderation queue?

![]() The other thing to consider, if someone's account is removed as a result, they can simply take their entire archive, make a new user and reup that way. Maybe even reupload using some sort of "trick" to throw the prior algorithm if they figure out a way to "trick" it via word of mouth. The bigger the plat, the more people to counter their techniques, since obviously someone wants access to that hot userbase/name-recognition. So the same pictures that were meticulously sifted through are reupped again and again. They can use other algorithms for detecting reupped dupes, but if they're modified at all it will require even more sensitive check (more CPU), so they have to gauge their costs for these memory-intensive operations, paying people to write the code to detect (if they don't have a means through third-party), as well as also storing old "deleted image" data to be able to match them... which means another database to manage, even more layers of "complexity" and more code to maintain. Somebody has to write the backend for all that, and probably it will require a lot of CPU power (so expensive) and manpower the more "sensitive" it gets. Probably there will be some company, if it doesn't exist already, that does nothing but sift through content and identify this stuff, as well as dupes because I'm sure people up them in multiple places. That could emerge help to moderate digital content, but then there's always risks of data leaks with any sort of third party collab. I think in most cases, the users will always be ahead of the curb when it comes to content-filtering... it's way faster to upload than it is to get something taken down.

A good lesson in how to kill your own website in weeks. The criteria is hypocritical and sexist as well as intolerant of the LGBT community since I've heard a lot that posts about LGBT matters have been flagged as explicit when they aren't as well. In fact a lot of posts and blogs that aren't pornographic in nature are being hit by this which is just another layer of **** upon the **** cake that Tumblr have made themselves eat especially when you consider that the various Neo-Nazi blogs and users have been unaffected. Racism and bigotry is A-okay! Just don't show a woman's nipple but men's are fine!
The management and admin of that site are lazy and incompetent, I can understand the intent of their actions as iTunes removed their app from their store due to issues relating to some users posting child porn but the answer to that problem is to deal with the people posting the illegal content, every creative platform suffers from that issue but censoring legal content aimed at adult users is not the way of dealing with such an issue. They've used a hammer when they should have opted for a needle. |
